Anup Gurung
I am Anup Gurung, an IFMGA certified mountain guide from the Nepal Himalaya. Over the past decade, I have climbed and guided in the Himalayan mountains and various regions worldwide. My expertise lies in leading expeditions to 8000, 7000, and 6000-meter peaks, as well as guiding treks through some of the most challenging and stunning Himalayan landscapes.
Growing up in the foothills of the mighty Manaslu, my passion for the outdoors ignited at an early age. My adventure journey formally started in 2008 acquiring the very basic rock climbing training and within a year, I completed the trekking guide training which enabled me to lead and guide trekkers to the marvels of Nepal. These fundamental steps eventually led me to scale the highest mountains in the world.
My strength lies in assessing risks, and making informed decisions in high-altitude environments. I possess extensive knowledge of mountain safety, weather patterns, and route-finding. As a guide, my commitment is twofold: ensuring the safety of my clients and providing them with an unforgettable mountain experience.
My educational background includes an Intermediate Course in management stream from KIST College, Kathmandu (affiliated with Tribhuvan University). These formative years laid the groundwork for my future endeavors in mountaineering. While I couldn’t pursue further academic endeavors, I acquired nearly every skill-based and vocational courses that equipped me with the knowledge and abilities to tackle with the toughest conditions in my genre and that is what I believe makes a better mountain guide.
My mountaineering experiences span a wide range of peaks. From Lobuche (6119 meters) to Everest (8884.86 meters), I have stood atop some of the world’s highest summits. I have led clients on both relatively easier peaks like Pokalde, Lobuche, and Island, while leading and guiding seasoned climbers to 8000ers like Everest, Lhotse, Manaslu and technical peaks like Amadablam and Dulagiri. My ability to navigate high-altitude challenges, assess risks, and ensure safety sets me apart. I prioritize client comfort and confidence, going beyond the contracted obligation whenever needed.
My commitment extends to search and rescue efforts. I participated in recovery missions, including the Tara aircraft crash site at remote Mustang in 2022. On Everest in 2021, I recovered a deceased climber between Camp I and Camp II from around 6000 meters. These experiences underscore my dedication to fellow climbers and the importance of preparedness in extreme environments.
I believe in exploration as a fundamental aspect of mountaineering. I have explored rock climbing routes in the sheer Himalayan cliffs and conducted feasibility studies in over Nepal. My expedition to Manang in western Nepal, in 2022, focused on ice climbing possibilities, contributing to the broader understanding of Himalayan terrain.
I also actively participate in climbing competitions. In my earlier days, I used to compete extensively and secured positions in national climbing competitions, demonstrating my lead climbing skills. These events not only showcase individual abilities but also foster camaraderie within the climbing community. These days, I show my respect for these competitions as a climbing jury and judge.
I share my knowledge to the young adventure enthusiasts through courses, trainings and instructions. I’ve taught courses at Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal (MMSN), and Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), covering topics from mountain medicine to basic and advanced mountaineering. My certifications include IFMGA/UIAGM Mountain Guide and various ski and rescue courses. Empowering the next generation of climbers remains close to my heart.
I actively contribute to adventure tourism. Upholding international standards as a guide through IFMGA/UIAGM, supporting Nepal’s mountaineering community via NNMGA, imparting skills to aspiring climbers through Nepal Mountaineering Instructor Association (NMIA), fostering growth with the Nepal Climbing Team (NCT), and affiliations with NMA and Gandaki Alpine Club (GAC) for adventure development. Collaborating with like-minded organizations ensures sustainable and responsible mountaineering practices.
My legacy echoes through the mountains I’ve climbed, climbers I’ve guided and helped them realize their dream summits, the lives I’ve saved, and the climbers I’ve inspired. Adventure remains my compass, and safety my guiding star. As I continue my journey, I remain committed to the mountains, the people, and the spirit of exploration that defines mountaineering.
