The US Nepal Climbers Association and Nepal National Mountain Guide Association today announced that all preparations for the first Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition have almost completed.

Organising a press meet, NNMGA General Secretary Tshiring Jangbu Sherpa said that the organizers were giving a final touch to the preparatory works for the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition (Top Rope Edition), which is scheduled to take place on January 29 at Crimpanzee Adventure Hub, Bouddha.

The event jointly organised by the USNCA and NNMGA aims to promote the sport of climbing, offering a platform for climbers of all levels to showcase their skills and passion for ascending to new heights. “The competition aims to unite climbers from diverse backgrounds, encouraging a vibrant and supportive community bound by a shared love for the ascent,” Tshiring Jangbu, who is also coordinator for the event, added.

USNCA’s treasurer Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa said that the joint event marks a collaborative venture between NNMGA and USNCA. “We plan to continue it as an annual event,” he added.

“We expect more than 40 participants in the event,” founding president of USNCA Serap Jangbu Sherpa said. The event promises not only intense competition but also a celebration of climbing culture, camaraderie, and the enduring spirit of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, he shared.

For the event, Imagine Nepal Treks, 4Stories, USNCA chair Passang Nima Sherpa, 8K Expeditions, Likla Outdoor, Wongchu Peak Promotion and The North Face Nepal agreed to become the title sponsors while BaRo 360, Dawa Jangbu Sherpa, Lakpa Geljen Sherpa, Phutila Sherpa and Mountain Hardware would be the gold sponsors, according to the organizers.

The event also aims to become a launchpad for climbers aspiring to reach Olympic heights. According to Lhakpa Nuru, participants in both the male and female categories have the opportunity to win impressive cash prizes in the competition.

“The first, second, and third positioned climbers will be awarded a cash prize of NRs 15,000, NRs 10,000, and NRs 5,000, respectively,” the organizers added. The winners will also get hanging boards, certificates and striking medals while all participants will be given certificates. Anyone above the age of 12 years can participate in the competition after paying Rs 500 as registration fee.

“In the coming years the event aims to diversify its categories,” Tshiring Jangbu informed. The organizers aim to introduce additional categories such as lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering, expanding the competition’s scope and providing more opportunities for climbers to showcase their skills across different disciplines.

First Babu Chiri Sherpa Memorial Climbing Competition set for March 14

The inaugural Late Babu Chiri Sherpa Memorial Open Sport Climbing Competition, 2024 is scheduled to take place in Kathmandu, on March 14.

The event, jointly organized by the New York-based Alpine Sports Association, INC. and Everest Summitter’s Association (ESA), is scheduled to be held at the Crimpanzee Adventure Hub, in Bauddha, informed President Nwang Nima Sherpa of the ASP during a press conference today.

“Through this competition, we aim to enhance the experience of sports climbing development in Nepal by positively impacting the adventurous sports industry and its participants,” Sherpa said.

During the event, Sherpa also informed of the establishment of the Alpine Sports Association-North America-Nepal in New York with the aim of promoting adventure mountain sports at the international level. He also mentioned that such competitions play a significant role in promoting adventurous mountain sports.

In the program, Maya Sherpa, the President of the Everest Summitters’ Association, reminisced about the late Babu Chiri Sherpa, the world-renowned climber, and his remarkable contributions.

She emphasized the need for an increasing number of competitions like this to remember the achievements of legendary climbers like Babu Chiri Sherpa. She also mentioned that the competition will be organized annually. Furthermore, she highlighted the stewardship of the ESA in preserving the legacy of Babu Chiri Sherpa through the maintenance of his statue and museum.

The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) will provide technical support (route setting, judging, safety, and Beley service). The competition will feature categories for both men and women, with cash prizes of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000, and Rs 15,000 to the first, second, and third place winners, respectively.

Late Babu Chiri Sherpa is considered one of the greatest mountaineers ever. He has summited Mount Everest ten times (including four times from the Chinese side) and is recognized as one of the strongest climbers in the Himalayas and a world-renowned mountaineer.

He managed to set two world records on Mt. Everest during the spring season by spending more than 21 hours on the summit of Mount Everest without oxygen (still a record), and by climbing the Mt Everest from the south side for the fastest time in 16 hours and 56 minutes. Unfortunately, he died on April 29, 2001, during his attempt to climb Everest for the 11th time.

Second edition of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition scheduled for January

The second edition of the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition is set to take place on January 29 and 30.

Organized by the US-Nepal Climbers Association (USNCA) in collaboration with the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), the event aims to promote mountaineering sports and celebrate the legacy of the legendary climber Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

According to Sherap Jangbu Sherpa, founding president of USNCA and coordinator of the competition, the event will span two days. The qualification rounds will be held at a venue yet to be announced, while the semifinals and finals will take place at the Crimpanzee Adventure Hub in Boudha.

The competition is open to individuals aged 12 years and above, with a participation fee of Rs 500. Separate categories will be held for men and women, with cash prizes awarded to the top three participants in each group. The winners will receive Rs 45,000, Rs 35,000, and Rs 15,000 for the first, second, and third places, respectively. Organizers expect around 40–45 men and 20–25 women to take part.

The competition format includes qualification rounds on the first day, followed by semifinals and finals on the second. All the technical aspects of the event will be managed by the NNMGA.

Sherpa emphasized that the competition aims to inspire interest in mountaineering and promote adventure tourism in Nepal. “Having successfully hosted a Top Rope Edition in the US, we introduced the concept to Nepal last year, which received an encouraging response from young participants. This year, we are continuing the effort with the second edition,” he said.

Additionally, Pimba Tenzing Lama, General Secretary of NNMGA and co-coordinator of the event, described the competition as more than just a contest. “This is a tribute to the unparalleled spirit of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and a celebration of the camaraderie and culture of climbing,” he noted.

The organizers have announced plans to alternate the coordination of the competition between USNCA and NNMGA annually under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Last year, Sajan Lama and Srijana Tamang won the First Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition (Top Rope Edition) was held on January 29 at Crimpanzee Adventure Hub in Bauddha, Kathmandu.
